The Secretary General of the German Federal Environmental Foundation, Alexander Bonde, explains that the University of Greifswald’s Dr. Franziska Tanneberger was chosen for the award as a result of her passionate commitment to the true multi-talents of wet peatlands. “The rewetting and protection of peatlands is of existential significance for us and for life on earth. These are both particularly indispensable for climate protection. As an excellent and globally highly recognised peatland researcher, Franziska Tanneberger and her team’s tireless efforts have managed to incorporate the significance of peatland protection and rewetting for a future worth living in national and international political decision-making processes.”
Dr. Franziska Tanneberger and her colleague Dr. Greta Gaudig have managed the Greifswald Mire Centre, a cooperation between the university, the Michael Succow Foundation, and Duene e.V. since 2015. At GMC, approximately 100 members of staff work together creatively on the topic of peatlands, at the interface between research, politics and practice. Dr. Tanneberger teaches and performs research at the University of Greifswald.
"The Environmental Award is not just a prize for me, it recognises and honours the work of many people. Peatland protection can only be achieved together, really good solutions are the result of collaboration – and the scientific findings and political impulses from Greifswald were developed jointly. I am really delighted that I will be able to use this award to continue our work on this field and at the Greifswald Mire Centre,” says Dr. Franziska Tanneberger.
The German Environmental Award honours the commitment and achievements that have made a decisive and frontrunning contribution to the protection and preservation of our environment. The award is bestowed upon individuals whose innovative products and improvements to technical processes, successful research results or lifetime achievements have contributed towards sustainable environmental protection. Prof. i.R. Dr. Dr. Hans Joosten from Greifswald also received this prize in 2021. Prof. em. Dr. Michael Succow received the DBU’s Honorary Award as an exceptional figure in nature conservation in 2015.
