German Universities Open to the World

We support the HRK campaign ‘German Universities Open to the World’

On the 10th November 2015 the General Assembly of the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) made a mark against xenophobia and brought the campaign ‘German Universities Open to the World - Against Racism and Chauvinism’ to life. The reason for this action is the current rise of xenophobic tendencies in Germany and Europe.

The University of Greifswald is supporting this HRK campaign, which is being carried by all of Germany’s tertiary education institutions. Our support is shown by displaying the campaign logo on our website.
In a press release, the HRK writes: ‘The General Meeting emphasised its concern of the universities, yet also expressed its willingness to take action at universities. University leaders want to encourage members of universities to stand up to xenophobia and act accordingly in a regional context.’
The University of Greifswald’s Senate had already positioned itself against xenophobia at its session in October.

Diverse University - Senate Statement from 21/10/2015

Due to recent xenophobic activities in the town, the Senate would like to remind of the University’s Mission Statement. The Extended Senate renews and strengthens its commitment to international research and teaching at the University of Greifswald that is open to the world. At the same time, it commits to a collegial and respectful treatment of one another as a basic principle for all members of the University, irrespective of their origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, possible disabilities or social background. The University will do its utmost to support refugees who have come to Greifswald and are interested in studying.

Horst Hippler, President of the German Rectors’ Conference

‘We will use all of our strength to combat racist tendencies in Germany and Europe. Universities desire and require open-mindedness and internationality. Traditionally, they are places of open-minded thinking that are home to openness, freedom of opinion and tolerance. The universities want to help prevent hatred and aggression gaining the upper hand. All of the people belonging to universities are called to play an active part.’
