Around 34 percent of this year’s freshers come from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A little more than half (approx. 56 percent) of the new students come from other federal states and 144 (roughly 10 percent) from abroad. 157 freshers come, for example, from Brandenburg, 76 from Schleswig-Holstein, and 87 from Niedersachsen. A total of more than 9800 students are currently enrolled at the University of Greifswald. 866 of those come from a total of 101 countries outside of Germany.
In her address to the freshers and members of the university community, Rector, Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel, underlined that university studies go much further than the simple acquisition of facts: "When you leave our university following successful completion of your studies in a few years' time, I hope you will leave as rational thinkers, who make use of their own critical opinion, take a stand and defend it. Learn how to question and reflect upon what you see and hear! There is almost nowhere else more suitable for this than our universities! The daily news in print or social media show just how important these skills are for modern-day society."
The opening ceremony ended with a “Welcoming Fair” that was organised jointly by the university and the University and Hanseatic town of Greifswald. The fair is traditionally opened by the Rector’s and Lord Mayor’s joint tapping of a keg of free beer.
The freshers were able to get to know the university and their fellow students during Freshers’ Week last week. A special thank you must go to the Students' Union (AStA). The team put together an extensive welcoming and information programme.
