Experience the history of the second oldest university in Northern Europe from its foundation in 1456 to the present day. Visit one of the most beautiful main university buildings in Germany, the historic Audimax and the Rubenow Monument.

Discover the most famous historical interiors of the University of Greifswald: the former baroque library and the student prison, which is only nine square metres in size and contains various wall paintings.

Tour No. 3
The Audimax and the last Student Karzer of Greifswald
The lecture hall buidling (1884-1886), which was restored in 2007/2008 with funds from the Alfried Krupp Kolleg foundation, has now reopened to visitors. Where students cram during the day, interested visitors can linger in the evening in historic lecture halls with original seating from the Prussian Empire. The murals on the walls of the last student prison in Greifswald are truly unique.

The Karzer
At the University of Greifswald, one of the rare prisons for students has been preserved and thus a testimony to academic jurisdiction in Germany. The graffiti paintings on the walls still tell of the immoral lifestyles and disciplinary offences of the Greifswald students.

Baroque Magnificence in the University’s Library
A professor from Greifswald drew up the architectural design for the magnificent Saalbibliothek located in the University’s Main Building dating back to the late baroque period. Books were stored and displayed there from 1750 to 1882. Since then, the festive hall has been used as an Aula (assembly hall). Today, concerts and academic ceremonies (for example doctoral graduations) take place there.

Legends and Scary Stories
A tour of the historic campus combined with scary stories of Greifswald and a visit to the student Karzer (student detention cell). Lighting the way with a lantern, a pedel tells the story of the murder of Greifswald's first rector and spooky ghost stories. Recommended for children up the 6. grade.

University & Town
This special tour is organised in cooperation with the Greifswald Information Centre. Student tour guides from the Kustodie offer you the combine experience of a guided tour through the city and the University with Aula and Karzer (student detention cell). The meeting point is on the market square in front of the Greifswald Information Centre.
