German Environmental Award 2024 for Dr. Franziska Tanneberger
The Director of the Greifswald Mire Centre, Dr Franziska Tanneberger, has received the German Environmental Award 2024 [de] from the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU). She was thus recognised as one of the world's most influential researchers on peatlands and their role in the climate and biodiversity. She is regarded as a driving force in the revitalisation of peatlands and as a bridge-builder for science, politics and agriculture. She shared the prize with Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Speidel from Nürtingen. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented the DBU's German Environmental Award to both of them on 27 October in Mainz. Peatland research in Greifswald can look back on more than 200 years of history.
